Dr. h. c. Soo-Nam Park

President German Taekwondo Union

Dear players and coaches, dear guests,

it is a pleasure and honor for me, to welcome you to the German Open.

For our federation – the German Taekwondo Union – it is a very special and exciting occasion to have visitors from all over the world as our guests. The Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg is in every respect an ideal home for our international event. On the one hand, the generous support from the Free and Hanseatic City is vital for the success of our tournament. At this point I would like to thank Mrs. Janina Elgert from the sports council and Senator Mr. Michael Neumann for their help. On the other hand, Hamburg is attractive, has a good infrastructure and last but not least the right image. The town is well known as Germany’s gateway to the world and it is also the European city with the most bridges. So for our bridge building to the taekwondo world we could find no better place.

But despite these good conditions the German Open would not be possible without an able organizing team on site. I would like to thank the organizers from “Hamburger Sportfreunde e.V.” lead by Mrs. Adele Marschner, Mr. Matin Barikbin, Mr. Jens Beckmann, Mr. Sven Hartmann and Mr. Michel Mialki. They all pour a lot of passion and hard work into their aim to make the German Open better from year to year.

The year 2013 is still young – but even so an important decision for our sport already took place: In February the IOC Executive Committee decided to recommend our sport as one of 25 core sports for the Olympic Summer Games 2020. For the Taekwondo-family worldwide this is a tremendous motivation. Many players and coaches, who take part in this German Open, prepare for the World Championships. But I am sure a lot of them also have the Olympics at the back of their minds. I wish all participants much success in the realization of their personal aims. I would be very happy, if here in Germany we were able to make a small contribution to your career. Keep us in good memory – and visit us again soon.
